Cost per agent: monthly SaaS vs x402 pay-per-call
Agents can share a data plan when its terms permit, or pay for individual requests. Compare total workload and utilization rather than assuming each agent needs a separate subscription. x402 changes the unit: the agent pays per call, in USDC, from its own wallet.
The formula
- SaaS cost per agent = plan price ÷ number of agents sharing it (plus overage)
- x402 cost per agent = calls per month × price per call
Break-even calls = plan price ÷ price per call.
Worked examples (FastAF x402 prices)
| Agent | Calls/month | Mix | x402 cost |
|---|---|---|---|
| Price watcher, 50 ASINs daily | 1,500 | amazon @ $0.003 | $4.50 |
| SEO rank checker, 20 keywords weekly | ~90 | serp @ $0.003 | $0.27 |
| Research agent | 300 | scrape @ $0.005 | $1.50 |
| Mostly idle prototype | 20 | 10 serp + 10 scrape | $0.08 |
Against a hypothetical $49/month plan, break-even is 49 ÷ 0.003 = 16,333.33 calls: x402 costs less through 16,333 calls and more from 16,334. This assumes identical successful-call coverage and no overage or other costs; $49 is an illustration, not a vendor quote. The ASIN example assumes a 30-day month; the weekly example uses about 4.5 weeks. Prices checked against code and live 402 quotes on 27 October 2026.
When SaaS wins
- Very high, steady volume (tens of thousands of calls a month per workload)
- A plan that provides the options your workload needs. On FastAF, rendering plus premium proxies, AI extraction and advanced SERP exceed the current fixed x402 price and need API-key billing
- Your finance team wants one invoice, not wallets
Why x402 suits agents
- No signup step that an agent cannot do alone
- Wallet funds constrain payments, but enforce per-call price limits and request budgets in your client too
- You pay only on success: failed upstream calls settle nothing
- Idle agents cost $0
Does FastAF sell a monthly subscription?
FastAF API-key billing uses one-time prepaid credit packs, not monthly subscriptions. The code defines Starter at $10 for 20,000 credits, without expiry. Default SERP costs 5 credits and a Amazon product lookup costs 1 credit. At full utilization, those allocate $0.0025 per SERP call and $0.0005 per Amazon product call; the $10 upfront purchase remains payable even if you use only part of the pack. These are credit-pack costs, distinct from the $0.003 x402 minimum. Higher-cost variants consume more credits.
FAQ
Are 20 mixed calls always under ten cents?
No. Ten SERP calls plus ten basic scrape calls cost $0.08 over x402. Twenty LinkedIn calls at $0.06 each cost $1.20. Specify the mix before estimating.
Is the $49 plan a real FastAF offer?
No. It is a hypothetical monthly plan used to explain break-even. FastAF sells one-time credit packs and separate x402 per-call access.
Is there a recurring free allowance?
Yes. Each account receives 500 free credits every month after email verification, shared across keys and REST/MCP. They reset to 500 at 00:00 UTC on the 1st of each month, unused free credits do not carry over, and they do not apply to x402 calls.
Where can I explore the API?
Read the documentation and pricing, or try the browser tools. Relevant products include the Google SERP API, Amazon API and web scraping API. See Amazon price monitoring, page-to-Markdown workflows and the x402 glossary.
